Archie Ro ach: A Retrospective Concert

In 1988 much of Australia was celebrating the Bicentennial but a young Archie Roach was expressing in song what many who weren’t celebrating were feeling. Twenty-one years later Archie launched his new album Music Deli Presents Archie Roach -1988 with a series of shows. The majority of the album recorded in 1988 captures Archie’s raw power and emotion in song. This retrospective concert honours the past and the journey through life for one of our most respected and legendary musicians.

Auriel Andrew

Celebrating over 50 years of performing in Australia, Deadlies Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Auriel Andrew began her career in the late 1960’s working with Chad Morgan. She performed at the grand opening of the Sydney Opera House, recorded iconic anthem Brown Skin Baby with Bobby Randall and sang Amazing Grace in Pitjantjatjara for Pope John Paul II. Auriel presents stories through songs in a contemporary Indigie-folk style. Auriel also shares her wisdom in the Seen Your Moments: Our Elders Take on Life and Yarnin’ ‘bout my Generation.

B-Boy 2Ezy

Isaac Parsons aka B-Boy 2 Ezy has been performing and teaching breakdancing for the past decade. A winner of the Under 18 Victorian Break Dancing Championship and runner-up in the National Break Dancing Championship, he is originally from Brewarrina in far western New South Wales, and represents the Ngeamba nation. B-Boy 2Ezy has showcased his talents in the ring before an Anthony Mundine World title bout and as a back-up dancer for Shakaya and Ice-T.

Black Limousine

Black Limousine plays new blues. We say new because they are the latest in a long line of artists to reinterpret the blues but do so in an age of saturated technology where ‘R n B’ often means a pre-packaged, commercially slick product. The blues this outfit play combine pulsating originals and covers of forgotten but powerful artists such as Mississippi Fred McDowall, Slim Harpo and Howlin’ Wolf. The band comprises of Alfred Davis on slide, electric guitar and vocals, Mark Smith on bass and Darren Poulton on drums.

Busby Marou

Busby Marou are an alt-country duo who are quickly making an impact on the Australian music scene. Jeremy, a proud Torres Strait Islander from Murray (Mer) Island, has rare musical talent. He is fluent on many instruments including ukulele, bass, drums and piano - but it is his mesmerising ability on guitar mixed up with the smooth vocals of Tom Busby that makes this concert one you don’t want to miss. They are launching their new album here at the festival.

Celestino Andean Fusion

Celestino is an instrumental ensemble consisting of Andean, Afro Cuban and western influences, fused together to form an exquisite flavour. Four members each play a wide range of percussive and melodic music. The melody is played by traditional South American instruments sikus (panpipes) and quenas (flutes) accompanied by rhythm section guitar, charango (Bolivian native string instrument) and keyboard. Passionately fusing cultures, Celestino reaches out to the diverse audience through the most understood language in the world - music.

Chocolate Strings

Described as one of Brisbane’s finest purveyors of grooved out dub, their soulful tracks have captured the attention of many. A range of diverse backgrounds and influences give them a smorgasbord of sounds, a veritable buffet of fresh beats, bass and acoustic grooves to please the most discerning appetite. From the rich deep Polynesian vocal styles of female vocalist Ofa Fanaika to the fresh rhymes of MC Charlie Chocolate, these cats serve up a set where the only thing you can be sure of is leaving with a smile on your dial and sore legs from non-stop dancing.

Corey Kirk

A once shy Corey Kirk used to climb trees and sing her heart out. The songbird felt the freedom of the world as she surveyed it far and wide, the wind lifting her spirit and carrying the words of this youngster far beyond the horizon. Thankfully, Corey found her voice and a renewed freedom performing on stage. For this talented songstress, music is a way to talk about the social issues experienced by Indigenous Australia.

Dakathirr

Dakathirr is a young singer songwriter living in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. This 21- year old Torres Strait Islander will entertain audiences with a blend of acoustic contemporary folk and alternative grooves. Weaving soaring vocals together with guitar riffs that grab you by the ears and drag you in.

Dale Robert Huddleston

Launching onto the music scene in 1999 with the debut album, Simple Things Dale Huddleston and The Riverbank Band have been entertaining audiences for decades. The group has gone from strength to strength performing and supporting artists including Jessica Maubouy, Casey Donovan, Troy Cassar Daley, Jimmy Little, John Butler, Mental as Anything, Shane Howard, Goanna Band and Yothu Yindi. Now solo, Dale performs a blend of ballads, love songs and songs of Aboriginal culture combining acoustic harmonies with some good old country rock.

Dan Sultan

Dan Sultan (Eastern Arrente-Gurindji) has been a star on the rise for quite some time and has received rave reviews for his performances. Dan’s latest album scored the very coveted Album of the Week on Triple J and is currently one of the highest selling records on the Independent Australian Album Charts. Sultan’s career is now taking the next step thanks to collaborations, touring, festivals and a starring role in the current feature film Bran Nue Dae. Here for one fantastic show only.

Dave Arden

Dave is a Gunditjmara/Googatha guitarist and songman. For the last 25 years Dave has worked with many great Indigenous acts including Hard Time Band, Koori Youth Band, Bart Willoughby, Mixed Relations, and Building Bridges. Dave has toured extensively with Archie Roach’s band, both nationally and internationally, and performs his own material on Archie’s second album Jamu Dreaming. He has also built up a body of work with other artists including Goanna, Crowded House, Not Drowning Waving, Hunters and Collectors and Weddings, Parties, Anything.

Dave Dow and the human groove

Dave Dow (Eastern Torres Strait Islands lineage) and The Human Groove will undoubtedly thrill with a musical repertoire which includes a fusion of R&B, funk, reggae, soul, and jazz. Dave’s charisma, humour, ‘iPod’ impressions of other artists, and infamous vocal trumpet impersonations, together with a groovin 10-12 piece band make this a show you don’t want to miss.

Dave West

Dave was born in Ecuador and raised in Canada. This multi-string and vocal prodigy has thrilled audiences the world over with his stunning virtuosity on his fretless nylon and steel string guitars,Tumak harp-guitar and their use in contemporary arrangements. His music is influenced with Northern and Southern Quichua, Shuar and Tsachila nations as well as coastal and andean Afro- Ecuadorian music. Current projects include the musical Ayawaska 2007 CD Choclo y la Orgia Cosmica and his ethno-blues configuration.

Digging Roots

Freshwater

A four women act including, sisters Nardi, Jilda and Lucy Simpson of the Barwon and Namoi rivers of Western NSW and best friend Kaleena Briggs of the mighty Murrumbidgee. Freshwater come together to sing traditional language stories as well as English. Nardi and Kaleena met as students through the Eora Centre in Redfern before forming the acclaimed act Stiff Gins. A smooth vocal blend to soothe the soul.

Grrilla Step

Grrilla Step is the world’s first Krump Band. An exciting new project for DJ Dexter (ex Avalanches), who has changed musical directions dramatically since he became disillusioned with the mainstream music scene and met Papua New Guinean log drumming master Airi Ingram (Drum Drum) on a trip to Darwin. Soon after Dexter sought out the Pacific Islander Krump crew Royal Fam from Dandenong, who interweave Polynesian culture with Krumping to create their own unique Krump characters. With Grrilla Step, Dexter and Airi are pursuing their collective vision of incorporating cultural music into hip-hop, and creating a new Australian music form which is truly boundary-crossing and groundbreaking.

Janet Panic

A metis performer from central Canada, Janet Panic has been performing since 1997. King Kapisi

King Kapisi is New Zealand based Samoan Hip- Hop artist Bill Urale. He was the first Hip-Hop artist in New Zealand to receive the prestigious Silver Scroll Award at the APRA Awards for Songwriter of the Year for his single Reverse Resistance in 1999. King Kapisi has performed alongside Janet Jackson, Moby, Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. King Kapisi is also up for a beat boxing workshop on Monday.

Leah Flanagan Band

An artist with a musical style so diverse that even the most stringent of critics struggle to pigeonhole, Leah’s captivating vocals entwined with exquisite violin of Netanela Mizrahi, leave a lasting impression. Lee Morgan

Origins

Origins is reggae, funky blues, tango, acoustic folk, the sound of skins and stones, wrapped up in stories about who we are and where we come from. The mongrel mob from Tasmania and Broome tell timeless stories and play grooves that move your heart as well as your feet. Origins ask the big questions: Do trees talk? If a riverbed were a kitchen table what would I learn there? Chilean Barnacles have the longest genitalia in the barnacle world, why? And if my grandfather was a Croatian spy, why did he start making wholemeal flour?

Radical Son

From hip-hop roots through to soulful social statement Radical Son is a singer/songwriter from Australia like no other. Raven Kanatakta

Onkwehonwe Guitarist and composer, Raven Kanatakta was born and raised on a settlement/reserve in Winneway, Quebec. He grew up listening to Canadian First Nations icon, Willie Dunn, as well as traditional pow-wow music and old country, gospel and spirituals that were popular in the community. After writing jazz compositions for a big band and receiving his full scholarship degree at Berklee he still counts Son House and Jimi Hendrix as two of his musical heroes.

Shellie Morris

ShoShana Kish

ShoShona is a self-described ‘city girl’ of Anishinabe heritage who grew up in the Toronto area in a family that was part of the 70s First Nations cultural revival. She earned a University degree in Creative Writing in Penticton and was musically educated at Carleton University. She immersed herself in early recordings of ‘49ers’, pow-wow songs with English lyrics that were popular among Native war veterans. She also earned a Chalmers Fellowship and was a nominee for the H.M. Hunter Artists Award.

Mick Jagger tapped him to be his guitarist for the Goddess In The Doorway solo album in 2000. He was in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, providing the fingerwork for Rufus’s stunning guitar solo. Fresh from the launch of a new album, Stevie brings his own perspective to the To Collaborate or Not? panel and is a member of the Dreaming All Stars Supergroup.

The Medics have garnered acclaim in their hometown of Cairns, Far North Queensland, as a young energetic indie band with insightful songs wide in scope and musical sounds. The Steven Hart Band

Born in Cherbourg in the 1950s, Steven is a direct descendent of the Kullillee tribe and has historical connections to the Wakka Wakka tribe of Cherbourg. From the age of 10, Steven was taught by his late uncle Don Brad, an Elder from the Kookalanji tribe of Far North Queensland, to sing and corroboree dance and to play many musical instruments including the didgeridoo.

The Sunshine Reggae band hail from Ikunji, Haasts Bluff in the West Macdonald Ranges of the Central Desert. Ykson

Ykson is one of the revelations of New Caledonian music. Born on Lifou, a small Pacific Ocean island in New Caledonia, Jean-Philip Katreie Ihnomadra, also known as Ykson, began to sing at the age of 12, delighting audiences with his performances. His sound is an astonishing mix of rap, blues and reggae sounds combined with traditional Kanak rhythms.
